University of Arkansas Crop Budgeting Tools

 

The Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Board as well as other promotion boards fund an economic component of the verification program. This data is then compiled into an excel spreadsheet to help producers develop whole farm crop budgets.

Grain Drying and Storage Tools

 

The Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Board have helped to fund research to create guidelines for storing and drying corn and sorghum. The information is designed to help farmers who have never dried grain before understand the basics of grain handling and the supply the advanced user with a handy computerized program to assist them with grain drying.

Marketing

 

Arkansas Farm Bureau provides a daily market report that includes market commentary for the major crops, as well as a closing future prices and cash prices for each crop. Additionally the Farm Bureau hosts a Monthly Market Update Webinar at 8:30 am following the USDA crop report. Recordings of these conferences are posted by 10 am the morning following the report.

Production Handbooks

 

The Arkansas Corn and Grain Sorghum Board funded research to create a production handbook for corn and grain sorghum farmers in Arkansas. The handbook covers almost every aspect of producing the crops including: cultural practices, drainage and irrigation, fertilization and liming, insect and pest management, disease management, weed control, harvesting, storing and drying.

Refuge Calculator

 

This IRM refuge calculator is a tool intended to illustrate the appropriate refuge calculation, the quantity of standard seed bags to purchase for both trait and refuge, and possible planting configurations for planting certain corn products in the United States. This refuge calculator does not replace or supplement the applicable manufacturer's IRM Grower Guide in any way. As a grower using this information, you are still obligated to understand and abide by the applicable IRM Grower Guide on planting and Insect Resistance Management.

Focus on Corn – Plant Management Network

 

Plant Management Network is a not-for-profit, online publishing effort whose mission is to enhance the health, management, and production of agricultural and horticultural crops. PMN achieves this mission by developing science-based resources that help researchers, crop management professionals, consultants, growers, educators, and students make better plant management decisions and recommendations. PMN is jointly managed by the American Phytopathological Society, American Society of Agronomy, and Crop Science Society of America, in conjunction with many other partners, including scientific societies, agricultural universities, and agribusiness.

The Cooperative Extension Service is part of the University of Arkansas' Division of Agriculture. With offices in all 75 counties, UAEX faculty and staff provide educational programs and research-based information to the people of Arkansas. The Cooperative Extension Service performs most of the research projects funded by the board

Arkansas Ag in the Classroom

 

The Ag-in-the-Classroom program utilizes volunteers, both teachers and farmers, as in-classroom resources. Teachers incorporate Ag-in-the- Classroom materials with their normal, traditional curricula; and farmers often serve as teaching guests and distribute activity books and information on specific crops.  Through a grant provided by the Corn and Grain Sorghum Board both the Poultry and Corn Ag Readers are available free of charge to teachers across the state.

U.S. Grains Council

 

The U.S. Grains Council develops export markets for U.S. barley, corn, grain sorghum and related products. The Council believes exports are vital to global economic development and to U.S. agriculture's profitability.  Funds sent from the board to the Grains council are leveraged about 3:1 through matching USDA funding.

National Corn Growers Association (NCGA)

The NCGA represents approximately 35,000 dues-paying corn growers and the interests of more than 300,000 farmers who contribute through corn checkoff programs in their states. NCGA and its 48 affiliated state associations and checkoff organizations work together to help protect and advance corn growers’ interests.

United Sorghum Checkoff Program (USCP)

 

USCP is the National Sorghum Checkoff Board.  The Board was formed in 2008 to distribute collections of the National Checkoff (0.6% of value).  The board expects to hold a producer referendum by July 2011.  Stewart Weaver from Edmonson, AR holds one of the four at-large seats on the board.
