FERTILITY

Can Arkansas Corn Growers Increase their Profit Margin by Using Agrotain?... This project evaluated the potential of a synthetic urease inhibitor (Agrotain) for reducing N losses (ammonia volatilization) from the surface applied urea. The Minolta chlorophyl meter (CM) is an easy-to-use, affordable, handheld spectrophotometer, that is capable of measuring an index of plant chlorophyl content which is related to plant N content. The growers will benefit from development and availability of a new, rapid and reliable tool to apply N only when there is a likelihood of an increase in corn yield and profit margins.

The objective of the studies reported here were to evaluate the response of corn grain yield to varying rates of sidedress N fertilizer. Data collected in this study will serve as a scientific database for correlating and calibrating the PSNT and ASNT for improving corn fertilization in Arkansas.

OTHER CROP PROJECTS

Evaluation of White Sorghum Hybrids…Evaluate yield potential of white food grade grain sorghum hybrids compared to standard hybrids currently being grown. Determine if white grain sorghum hybrids have desirable agronomic traits and resistance to diseases commonly found in Arkansas, and evaluate white grain sorghum quality compared to hybrids currently being grown.

Discovery Farms…The Arkansas Discovery Farm program is currently collecting water quantity and quality data from both inflow from rain and irrigation and in outflow as runoff from four row crop farms , one in Arkansas County near Stuttgart (Corn, rice and soybeans), one in Desha County near Dumas (Cotton and Corn), and two in Cross County near Cherry Valley (Rice and soybean). Data in 2012 was collected from one rice field, four soybean fields and four cotton fields. A fifth row crop farm has been instrumented near Atkins and monitoring will begin in the Spring of 2013.

Practicality Evaluations of Grain Storage Techniques… The increase in corn acreage has mandated that much of the annual crop be handled, dried, and stored on farm. There are a large number of on farm bins that are utilized for this. Corn bags were utilized extensively in 2007-2009. However, limitations associated with bags point to the potential advantages of dryers and bins. General management procedures for on-farm handling, drying, and storing will help growers better manage their harvest options and capitalize on additional marketing alternatives. Collected bag, bin, and dryer data from cooperating Arkansas farms and sources from neighboring states were used to meet the objectives below.
